Wrathful Spirits

Creating a balance between order and chaos is central to much of the work but in the Tatarigami series, the forms take on almost human characteristics, anchored and foregrounded by the incorporation of the flat breaker panels which buffer the organic forms, and place them within a theatrical space. Tatarigami are wrathful spirits unable to completely assume physical form: in flux, writhing, shape changing, tortured perhaps, and the subtitles of these paintings suggest anthropomorphic personification or something like it. The character types are shameless: Climber, Biter, Stalker and Creeper are perhaps surrogates for malicious, unsavoury political or influential figures.
